PHILIPS - VACUUM CLEANER
Minimalistic stick vacuum cleaner - Team project
The client for this project, Philips, had tasked us with the design of a new minimalistic vacuum cleaner with a dust bag.
The Philips MinimalPro is a minimalistic stick vacuum cleaner designed for minor cleaning task that has the same ease of handling as a broom.
For fast accessibility, the product should be aesthetically unobtrusive to blend into the surrounding living environment, instead of being hidden in a closet.
VISION

USER TESTING
A structured ergonomic research offers the possibility to gain insights about the most desirable weight division, the handle and turning axis for a stick vacuum cleaner. Mockups were tested with participants in a realistic living room setup to evaluate on ergonomics and ease of use.

Product experience surveys were conducted to determine the most desired aesthetics of the product.
DESIGN TESTING

CONCEPT
A clear concept emerged after the user analyses, the ergonomic user tests and the aesthetic tests.
The concept consists out of two cylinders which are held together by an aluminium bracket. The turning handle combines the ergonomic benefits with the aesthetic appearance. For activating and using the vacuum cleaner, the turning handle needs to be rotated by 180 degrees. By turning the handle the cleaner become ergonomically pleasing.

In the embodiment phase, a working prototype was built, to proof the concept working. My focus was the engineering of the housing of the motor, see picture below. First parts were designed in SolidWorks and tested with FDM prints. The final prototype parts were 3D printed with SLA technology and spray painted.
